簡化寫作最基礎的方式是使用較簡單的詞彙。英文中較簡單的詞彙——動詞、名詞和形容詞——含義更寬泛，而較複雜的詞彙則含義更準確。因此，使用相對簡單的詞「安全係數」更高。
部分作家堅信「大詞」（較難、不常使用的單詞）不好，他們認為任何使用「大詞」的人只不過是想給讀者留下深刻印象。本原則表達的觀點是，在日常寫作中，作者應該使用較簡單的詞語。這並不是指在寫作中完全不存在使用「大」或更精準詞彙的情況，而是指作者在任何時候都要思考，針對特定讀者什麼樣的詞彙才恰當。
使用較簡單的詞彙
下面的列表展示了我們可以用較熟悉的詞替換較陌生的詞，從而使讀者更容易理解。
注意☞原則6提出要使用意思準確、具體的詞，而不是意思寬泛、模糊的詞，原則8的重點則是使用簡單詞。寫作藝術要求作者協調這兩個概念，從而保持一致。「小詞」（較簡單、常使用的單詞）不一定是精確詞，例如在「這個房子不錯」和「加班時間多」中，作者應該考慮用更準確的詞替換「不錯」和「多」，也可以選擇增加補充句，畢竟讀者很可能會疑惑：「不錯」和「多」究竟是什麼意思？
